YSL “All Hours Stick Foundation” – Review.

As the weather gets colder, I know that lots of you will be making changes to your make up routine. Like me, some of you will be adding lots of glitter and berry lipsticks to your make up bags for the party season that’s about to begin. But, what about foundation? Have you considered swapping your current formula for one that’s more appropriate for cold weather conditions?

I’m a big fan of tinted moisturiser and CC creams but during the winter months, I like to wear something that’s a bit more full coverage and lasts longer on the skin. Recently, I’ve been trying out the YSL “All Hours Stick Foundation”. I attended a masterclass given by Fred Letailleur, European Make Up Artist, where I was shade matched and very kindly gifted the foundation in the shade “B10”. As per usual, this was the lightest shade in the range and it’s a lovely match for my ghostly pale skin.

Initially, I wasn’t mad keen on the idea of a stick foundation. I’m beyond the fear of “pan stick” that I developed in my teenage years because I have tried some lovely high-end stick foundations but, in my experience, they just don’t last as long as their liquid counterparts. However, Fred demonstrated an application method whereby you apply the formula directly to your foundation brush, rather than your face, which means you only use the amount of product that you need. This method of application also leaves you with the option to create a very light base, which is what I prefer to do for daytime wear.

The formula itself is creamy and easy to blend. I always use a brightening primer, before applying foundation and when this product is applied over such a primer, it creates an absolutely gorgeous glow – I’m definitely sold. I blend the product with my Blank Canvas F20 brush and it creates a nice, medium coverage base. It’s heavier coverage that I like to wear during the summer months but the “All Hours” formula feels light on my skin and it lasts so much longer than the vast majority of foundations that I own.

When I really need my make up to last, I spend a little bit longer than usual building the products up. However, this stick foundation lasts extremely well without any effort. I’ve gotten 16 hours out of it without any notable wear, just a little around the nose but that definitely isn’t unusual for me. On two occasions when I’ve known I needed my make up to last from day to night, I applied this foundation over a primer and used both cream and powder blush, highlighter and bronzer and I have to say, my make up was still perfect when I was going to bed. I don’t need to top the “All Hours” foundation up throughout the day but I don’t have oily skin so I didn’t expect to. If you do have oily skin and find that you need to re-apply your foundation through the day, this stick formula would be a really handy one to just throw in your handbag. I also don’t need to dust it with setting powder after the product has set, unless I’m stuck to the dance floor when I’m out.

Overall, I’m so impressed. This foundation applies and blends like the dream. I can’t be sure that it wouldn’t cling to dry patches of skin but as far as I’m concerned, it’s a very creamy products that’s easy to blend so I wouldn’t expect it to. Anyone with oily skin would need a bit of setting powder throughout the day, but no more so than if they were wearing any other foundation.

The YSL “All Hours Stick Foundation” retails at €39.50 and it’s available from all Irish stockists including Debenhams, Brown Thomas and Arnotts.

So what do you think? Are you going to swap your foundation for something a little more full-coverage over the winter months? Let us know in the comments.

Valentine’s Day Fragrances, for Her

“All you need is love but, a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.” – Charles M. Schulz.

A few weeks ago, I wrote a little post detailing my top picks for Valentine’s Day gifts, for her. The post was really well received and I’m pretty sure there’ll be a lot of lucky ladies delighted with their Too Faced “Sweet Peach Palette” tomorrow morning but, I’ve had lots of last minute requests for another post – one based on perfume and how to choose the perfect scent. So, I’ve had a look through my own collection and studied some new releases and now, I’ve come up with a list of fragrances that would make great gifts. We’re going to divide these perfumes into categories of: sweet, seductive and floral scents. So, there’s something to suit everyone here.

Sweet Fragrances:

Viktor & Rolf “Bonbon” : €66 – €125 (Available Here).

viktor-and-rolf-bon-bon-review

“Bonbon” is a sweeter, more fruity version of Viktor & Rolf’s cult favourite “Flowerbomb”. This fragrance has obvious notes of caramel which make it softer than its sibling scent and perhaps a better option for those who prefer light perfumes, rather than strong scents.

Marc Jacobs “Daisy Kiss” : €69 (Available Here).

marc-jacobs-daisy-kiss

“Daisy Kiss” is a new release from Marc Jacobs, just in time for Valentine’s Day. The original “Daisy” fragrance was actually my first high-end perfume purchase so this collection will always have a special place in my heart. “Daisy Kiss” is one of three scents in the new collection and this one is definitely the sweetest scent. It has some very fruity top notes of Valentine pomelo and apricot nectar with some soft, musky base notes and a hint of cedarwood. “Daisy Kiss” a really fresh fragrance and would be perfect for everyday wear.

Mugler “Angel Muse”: €54 – €76.80 (Available Here).

angel-muse-mugler

I was gifted this perfume shortly before Christmas and it is gorgeous. It’s definitely a perfume for chocolate lovers as it contains some sweet notes of cocoa and hazelnut. If the lady in your life loves a sweet perfume that lasts all day, this one is a great option.

Floral Fragrances:

Viktor & Rolf “Flowerbomb Extreme”: €103 (Available Here).

viktor-and-rolf-flowerbomb-extreme

This fragrance from Viktor & Rolf is a really strong floral option for those who love a bold scent that lasts all day. Also, the packaging is gorgeous and will be a welcome addition to any lady’s dressing table. “Extreme Flowerbomb” has notes of Arabian jasmine and vanilla which make it a strong, floral and intoxicating fragrance.

Jo Malone “Red Roses Cologne”: €54 (Available Here).

jo-malone-red-roses-cologne

The “Red Roses Cologne” from Jo Malone is probably the ultimate Valentine’s Day fragrance. It literally smells like a bouquet of freshly cut roses with notes of lemon for a citrus finish.

Seductive Fragrances:

Hugo Boss “The Scent For Her”: €59 – €115 (Available Here).

hugo-boss

Now, this is a fragrance that I don’t have in my own personal collection but when the lovely Fiona from Perfumenotes.ie recommended “The Scent For Her” to me, I made it my business to pop into my local Debenhams for a sniff. And, it’s GORGEOUS! This scent is powerful, yet very feminine with top notes of honeyed peach, freesia and base notes of cocoa. This is a seductive, heady fragrance that I think would be gorgeous for night time. Want. Need. Must have. I cannot wait for pay day!

Tom Ford “Velvet Orchid”: €68 – €133 (Available Here).

tom-ford-velvet-orchid

“Velvet Orchid” is my favourite fragrance of all time. I have repurchased this one at least three times and I still LOVE it! It’s definitely a really strong fragrance, and lingers on the skin all day so this isn’t a pick for those who prefer light, fresh perfumes. However, the notes of citrus, honey and rum in this fragrance make it a really luxurious and seductive scent.

Armani “Si Intense”: €95 – €125 (Available Here).

armani-si-intense

Armani “Si” is a well known cult favourite perfume, worldwide. It’s loved by ladies of all ages. “Si Intense” is a sibling scent of the original and with notes of Sicilian bergamot, mandarin oil and blackcurrant liqueur; it’s more intense, sultry scent. I’ve had this one in my collection for years and I’ve never tired of it. Its a gorgeous, softly seductive perfume.

And there you have it – a complete guide to Valentine’s Day fragrances. Now all you have to do is decide which category the lady in your life falls in to!

Benefit “Ka-Brow” – Review.

“There are two ways to look younger: arch your eyebrows and find older friends”. – Benefit.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know that recently; Benefit released a huge collection of new eyebrow products. Now, anyone who knows me personally will already know that I’m a really big believer in the power of good brows. And, one of my favourite products has always been Benefit’s “Gimme Brow” so as you can imagine, I was majorly excited to find out what the new collection has to offer.

Ka Brow Benefit

For me, the stand out product of the new collection (which is very impressive in its entirety) is “Ka-Brow”. “Ka-Brow” is a gorgeous, creamy gel product that can be layered to provide anything from soft and natural looking eyebrows, to bold and dramatic arches. I have fallen in love.

benefit ka brow

Firstly, let’s talk about the gorgeous packaging. The silver and pink tones are sleek and sophisticated while also appearing totally fun and feminine. The product detaches into three parts to reveal a very nifty little brush that can be flipped upside down and slotted into position to become a full sized brow brush – magic!

The formula itself comes in six different shades. I’m currently using shade “3” which is perfect for auburn tones. “Ka-Brow” is completely waterproof and sweat resistant which will come in really handy when I travel to New York in early July. I have to say, I’m definitely not looking forward to the humidity – I’m too ginger for that!

I apply the formula by applying tiny amounts of the product to the brush provided and stroking lightly, following the natural shape of my eyebrows. I tend to avoid the “over done” look so as far as I’m concerned, less is more. To finish the look off, I sweep through with a spoolie or a clear eyebrow gel and ta-dah, eyebrow perfection.

Benefit’s “Ka-Brow” retails at €26 and you can purchase it online from Debenhams, at the Benefit Boutique on St William Street, Dublin or in selected retailers nationwide.

What do you think of the finished look? Have you tried any of the new eyebrow products from Benefit? Let us know in the comments!

Does this one even need an explanation? There is not a woman on this planet who would not love this eyeshadow palette. The collaboration between Urban Decay and Gwen Stefani is quirky, fun and surprisingly wearable – I have been using every single shade in my own palette. However, I would describe this palette as quite neutral, so if your lady of choice prefers a pop of colour, check out the Urban Decay “Vice 4” palette.

Tessa Metcalfe – Rings on Rings / Emerald & Peridot (£220).

London Rocks

This beautiful piece of jewellery is handmade by London designer, Tessa Metcalfe. I came across Tessa’s work a few years ago and have been dying to purchase a piece ever since. Bank balance willing, I will soon be adding this beauty to my collection. Set into this ring are a Columbian emerald and a pretty pale green peridot – well worth every penny! Available here from London Rocks.

Armani Prive – “Cuir Noir” (€215).

Armani Prive

This one is a dark, provocative perfume with leather accents. Although it is a very strong scent, I think it makes the perfect “night-time” fragrance. Available here from Brown Thomas.

Jo Malone London – Wood Sage and Sea Salt Cologne (€105).

Jo Malone

This fragrance is much lighter than the Armani Prive blend. The “Wood Sage and Sea Salt Cologne” stole my heart in seconds. Upon application, I was transported to a windswept haven – I could almost taste the bitter sea water. I am sick to death of “tropical” beach scents and this perfume offers a beautiful alternative. I love the notes of sage which add a delicate woody fragrance. It’s a soothing scent, reminiscent of rugged cliffs. This cologne has become my signature scent – you can read my full review here. The perfume is available here from Brown Thomas.

Wolford – Cara Swarovski Crystal Tights (€139).

Wolford Tights

These tights will make any woman feel like Beyonce – enough said. Available here from Brown Thomas.

Kate Spade New York – Cedar Street Maise Bag (€335).

Debenhams AW15 Collection – My Picks.

Those of you who follow me on Snapchat (username: rougewriting) will already know that I attended the Debenhams AW15 press event a few weeks ago. I’m studying for my FE1 exams at the moment, so posts are slightly delayed but I have finally gotten around to researching my top picks for the season.

Henry Holland Military Jacket

First up, I am in love with this H! by Henry Holland ‘Military Jacket’. Reminiscent of Cheryl Versini Fernandez’s style, this pick could be dressed up at night with the addition of heels and accessories or dressed down during the day with a cosy scarf. RRP €97.50 available here.

Henry Holland Jumper

Next up, we have another piece from the H! by Henry Holland collection. This wool mix jumper is playful yet, chic and could be worn with skinny jeans or casual mini skirts. RRP €60.00 available here.

Star Coat

This coat from Star by Julien Macdonald was my favourite piece from the AW15 collection which was displayed at the event. I love how the military style of this coat is softened by the pleated skirt – very 50s chic! I will definitely be purchasing this one for myself. RRP €180 available here.

Julien macdonal Top

This piece is such a fabulous colour that I couldn’t resist adding it to my picks for AW15. It is also from the Star by Julien Macdonald collection. The pleated detailing is flawless. I would match this top with a pair of ‘leather effect’ skinny jeans and killer heels. For those of us who are ‘tummy concious’, I’d imagine that this design would be very forgiving. RRP €67.50 available here.

Joe Brown Tights

Accessory wise, I love these patterned tights by Joe Brown. Patterned tights can really dress up an outfit and are perfect with casual shirt dresses for an understated sexy look. RRP €17.95 available here.

Red Herring Boots

I really like these Red Herring fringed ankle boots, also available in a ‘tan’ shade. RRP €52.50 available here.

Lipsy Shoes

And last but not least, are these Lipsy shoes. I actually purchased these to match my graduation outfit and I’m delighted with them. They’re gorgeous and very reminiscent of Taylor Swift’s ‘Bad Blood’ music video. They’re also relatively comfortable – hurray! RRP €90 available here.

And now, I have some extra good news – at the time of publishing there was 20% off all the items listed at Debenhams.ie so check them out sooner, rather than later.

Let me know what you think in the comments!
