My Birthday Beauty Wish List.

I cannot believe that it’s August 2018 already. It feels like it was five minutes ago that I was celebrating my 21st birthday and now I’m hurtling towards 30.. THIRTY! Jesus, the thought is giving me anxiety. If you had asked me four years ago where I would be right now, I reckon my delusional younger self would have been a bit too optimistic.

So without further ado, I’m going to focus on something a bit less frightening. Every year, I spend the month of August treating myself – I’m a big believer in the “Birthday Month”. I obviously spend weeks compiling a wish list and studying online reviews before I decided what to spend my (very) limited hard earned cash on. I asked if Rouge Writing Hood’s readers would be interested in reading a post about what I’ve classed as my “must haves” this year and 92% said that they would be. Majority rules so here we go..

Huda Beauty’s “Desert Dusk Palette” – €65:

img_2365

I had every intention of leaving this palette on the shop shelves forever. No way was I spending €65 of my moola on an eyeshadow palette – not a hope! And then, Sinead from The Beautiful Truth posted about it here and I knew I had to have it. So the “Desert Dusk” palette is at the top of my wish list now. The shade selection is right up my alley so I’m absolutely dying to try the formulas.

“Desert Dusk” is available here, from Arnotts.

Replica “By the Fireplace” – €105:

Replica’s “By the Fireplace” is my signature scent. I absolutely adore it and obviously, this one will be a re-purchase. I got a bottle of this last Christmas and I still have about 3/4 left so while it’s pricey, a little goes a long way and the bottle lasts ages. The fragrance is very much a cosy winter scent with seductive woody notes.

“By the Fireplace” is available here, from Brown Thomas.

Hourglass “Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick” – €50:

Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick

Hourglass launched in Arnotts last week so I popped into the store for a nose and I have to say, I sort of regret doing so because now I want EVERYTHING. First and foremost, I need to get my hands on this stick foundation because I tried it on and it’s nothing short of divine. I was matched with the shade “Porcelain” and it blended in with my natural skin colour perfectly. Even though it’s a stick formula (which you would expect to feel heavy), it feels soft and lightweight on the skin.

The Hourglass “Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick” is available here, from Arnotts.

Hourglass “Scattered Light Glitter Eyeshadow” – €30:

scattered_light_glitter_eyeshadow-review.jpg

I suppose that when you consider the fact that this single eyeshadow costs €30, the Huda palette doesn’t seem like bad value. Normally, I would say that this is CRAZY money for a single eyeshadow – especially because I always reach for palettes over my single shades but, I swatched this in store when I was trying the stick foundation and I fell in love. This is definitely the most “buttery” pigment I’ve ever come across in a glitter eyeshadow the gold shade was really vibrant. I can’t wait to add this to my collection.

You can find the “Scattered Light Glitter Eyeshadow” here, from Arnotts.

Charlotte Tilbury “Rock n Kohl: Iconic Liquid Eye Pencil” – €25:

Rock_n_Kohl_Iconic_Liquid_Eye_Pencil Eye Cheat

Alright, so I know I’m late to this party but I never use nude eyeliner to brighten up my eyes. My Mum recently purchased this Charlotte Tilbury one, in the shade “Eye Cheat” and definitely influenced me. It doesn’t seem to budge at all throughout the day and the nude shade is very pigmented so it’s easy to apply.

The “Eye Cheat” liner is available here, from Arnotts.

Tom Ford “Lip Colour” – €48:

Tom Ford Near Dark Lipstick

This is starting to feel like it’s going to be a very spend-y month altogether but I mean, have you seen this shade? It’s called “After Dark” and I think it will be so perfect for autumn and winter. I love deep red shades but I have nothing like this. I also love Tom Ford lipsticks. They’re mad expensive but they really are superior quality. The pigments tend to be very strong and I’ve been impressed with the lasting power of any shade that I’ve tried to date.

You can find “After Dark” here, from Brown Thomas.

And there you have it, a list of all the beauty bits that I am determined to treat myself to this month. Let me know if you have any more suggestions, as I’m always open to a few add-ons.

My Top “January Sales” Picks

Christmas is over and the festive season is firmly behind us. But, fear not – returning to work means a brand new paycheck which also means hitting the January sales. You only regret the things that you don’t buy but I’ve complied a little list of my favourite bargains to give you a little inspiration.

LanaiBlo Professional Hairdryer – Available Here:

lanaiblo-hairdryer

After reading The Beautiful Truth’s “Luxury Christmas Gift Guide” and watching her Snapchats, I found myself lusting after this LanaiBlo styling tool. Santa heard my plea and dropped one of these babies down the chimney and, I have to say, it’s definitely worth the money. The 2400 watt LanaiBlo is the brainchild of Irish entrepreneur Katie-Jane Goldin and it drys hair at a much faster rate than my previous hairdryer. It now takes me about 10 – 15 minutes to dry my hair which is pretty long, falling far below my shoulders. This hairdryer also uses ionic technology to provide an anti-static result. I rolled my eyes at that too but it actually does work! I’m finding less and less of a need for my GHDs.

The LanaiBlo is currently reduced from €99.99 to €89.99.

AYU “Chloe Brush Set” – Available Here:

img_8010

Again, this pick is one that I already have. I ADORE my “Chloe Brush Set” from AYU and used it almost every day over the festive season. It contains pretty much every brush you’ll need for a full face of make up, although I would recommend purchasing a stippling foundation brush too for fast application. I love the royal purple and gold colours in this set and because the brushes are made from synthetic fibres, they won’t absorb and waste product.

The AYU “Chloe Brush Set” is currently reduced from €60 to €45.

ESPA “The Replenishing Collection” – Available Here:

replenishing-collection

This gift set from ESPA is on my January wishlist because it contains all of my favourite skincare goodies from the brand in one box. ESPA is a gorgeous spa brand, available online and in luxury Irish resorts like Castlemartyr and Powerscourt. I absolutely adore their “Hydrating Cleansing Milk” which is in this set along with their “Hydrating Floral Spafresh” toner, “24 hr Replenishing Moisturiser” and “Overnight Hydration Therapy” which I have reviewed in full here. I’m actually running low on my ESPA products at the moment, so a sale is the perfect excuse to stock up. I would recommend these products for all skin types but, I think that dry and dehydrated “winter skin” would really appreciate the TLC that ESPA provides.

The ESPA “Replenishing Collection” is currently reduced from £60 to £42 and, ESPA are also offering a free full-sized cleanser to those who spend over £60 online.

Mugler “Angel Muse” Gift Set – Available Here:

mugler-angel-set

As some of you will already know, I included Mugler’s “Angel” in my “Christmas 2016 – Fragrances for Her” post. Now, Debenhams are offering 25% off this gorgeous “Angel Muse” set which includes a 50ml refillable eau de parfum and a complimentary 5ml miniature for your handbag. “Angel Muse” is a slightly sweeter fragrance than “Angel” and is lovely and fresh for everyday wear.

The “Angel Muse” gift set is currently reduced from €89 to €66.75 at Debenhams.

Benefit “Blushin’ Babe” Gift Set – Available Here:

Benefit Blushin Babe Set.jpg

Arnotts are offering a massive 33% off this gorgeous gift set from Benefit making it cheaper than one full-sized blusher from the brand. Benefit blushers are arguably the best on the market, loved by make up addicts worldwide. And, if you purchase this gift set, I highly doubt you’ll find any need to purchase another blush product for years. With five well-sized options to choose from, you’ll have the perfect shade for every occasion. And, Benefit have also included a mini “They’re Real” mascara and liner and a “Watts Up” highlighter.

Benefit’s “Blushin’ Babe” is currently reduced from €43 to €28.81 at Arnotts.

Juvi “Egadi Round Pendant” – Available Here:

web_rez_0007_1

I am OBSESSED with Irish designers Julie and Vincent Tynan’s creations. You can read my piece on their new “Initials Collection” here. This gorgeous pendant is available at a discounted price with a number of gemstone options. Labradorite is one of my favourite gemstones so I think that the option pictured is gorgeous, but it’s worth checking out the Juvi website for the other options including ruby and rose quartz.

The “Egadi Round Pendant” is currently reduced from €95 to €66.50.

theBalm – Christmas Collection 2016

“Dear Santa, I can explain….” – Anonymous.

theBalm are one of my favourite make up brands EVER. I love the quirky packaging but more importantly, I love the products. At a reasonable price-point, the brand never seem to fail when it comes to delivering on quality and that is really the important thing for every beauty addict. Keeping this in mind, I’ve decided to help you out a little when it comes to constructing your Christmas wish list. Apologies in advance, because I know you will want it all.

the-balm-meet-matte-hughes-mini

Meet Matt(e) Hughes Mini Collection

Anyone who follows me on social media already knows that I am OBSESSED with these liquid lipsticks. I think they beat the cult favourite “Kylie Jenner Lip Kits” hands down. I’ve written a full review here. My favourite shade is “Loyal” which is a divine red – perfect for Christmas. However, if I was purchasing a gift for a friend, I would definitely pick up this multi-pack. Six shades for just €29.

thebalm-balm-appetit

TheBalm Appetit Eyeshadow Palette

This one is a gorgeous eyeshadow palette that can be used to create neutral or fun, colourful looks. The packaging is quirky and cute with some tongue-in-cheek slogans and shade names. I love the inclusion of shimmer shades – we all need a little sparkle in our lives over the festive season. My favourite shade is “Chris. P Bacon” which is a gorgeous burnt orange colour with lots of shimmer – perfect for use as a “pop” shade on the centre of the eyelid. This palette retails at €39.95 which may seem a little steep but the shadows themselves are  a large size and should last a lifetime. It’s going to be a sell-out so my advice is to pick one up while stocks last.

the-balm-manizer-sisters

Meet the Manizer Sisters

Every beauty nerd has heard about theBalm’s cult favourite “Mary-Lou Manizer”. It’s arguably the best powder highlighter on the market so, if you haven’t tried it, what are you waiting for? Or better still, pick up this limited edition palette and try Mary Lou’s sister products too. I adore the “Cindy Lou” shade as a blusher – it’s my everyday go-to product. And, “Betty Lou” would be a great product for anyone who likes a bronzer that has a little flicker of shimmer throughout the formula. The “Meet the Manizer Sisters” palette would be perfect for gals on the go who don’t want to carry around really bulky, heavy make-up kits in their handbags. It retails at €28 which is very reasonable considering the individual products cost €21.50 each.

So what do you think of the products? I bet that you want them all! theBalm’s Christmas products are available from retailers nationwide including Debenhams, Meaghers Pharmacy and Make Up Forever (Clarendon Street, Dublin 2). Don’t forget to drop us a line in the comment section and let us know which gifts are on your Christmas wish list.

Billion Dollar Brows “Universal Brow Pencil”.

“I catch feelings for like an hour, and then go back to thinking about more important things; like my eyebrows”.

Eyebrows are a tricky business. Use too little product, and they look sparse and uneven. Use too much product, and they look drawn on and unnatural. Ugh, does anyone really have time for these shenanigans?
Luckily, I’m here to solve all your brow problems. Let me introduce Billion Dollar Brows “Universal Brow Pencil”. This product is what dreams are made of!
Billion_Dollar_Brows_Universal_Brow_Pencil
As a ginja ninja, the main issue that I have with finding effective eyebrow products is shade matching. However, Billion Dollar Brows promise that this one product, “The Universal Brow Pencil” matches all hair shades and skin tones and do you know what? It really does! We’ve tried this pencil with blondes, brunettes and red heads and by some mystery make up magic, it seems to suit us all!
billion dollar brows
The pencil is ridiculously easy to use, so much so that even my Mammy, who is a brow-phobe, loves it. To apply, start light. The more product that you apply, the darker the effect. Follow the shape of your natural brow and fill in accordingly. The next step is the most important. You MUST brush the product through using the spoolie attached to the pencil. Otherwise, you will look like an extra from Geordie Shore.  Afterwards, I like to coat with a clear brow gel. And tah-dah, you have flawless brows.
img_6262
I’ve been using this pencil non-stop for approximately 3 months, and I’m only half-way through the product. So, it’s definitely value for money. In fact, I can’t recommend this product enough. You can find it, along with the rest of Billion Dollar Brows’ products here at feelunique..com.

So, what do you think? Have you tried this brand before? Or, do you already have a favourite brow product? Let us know in the comments.

Make Up Forever “Aqua Brow” – Review.

Did you know that it is possible to sweat your eyebrows off? Or, at least it’s possible to sweat your eyebrows off if you’ve over-plucked them as a teenager and now have less eyebrow, more cleverly placed brow product. Oh, bother!

Make Up Forever Aqua Brow

Thankfully, Make Up Forever have stood up and taken notice of the plight of girls-on-the-go worldwide. Introducing, the “Aqua Brown” waterproof eyebrow corrector. Yes, you heard me. WATERPROOF! This means that you can finally have eyebrows at the gym, at the pool and even at the beach. Finally!

Make Up Forever’s “Aqua Brow” is a gel formula which promises to enable the user to fill, define and lengthen brows. It’s long-lasting, smudge proof and absolutely waterproof – which particularly good news to anyone forced to experience “Irish weather” on a daily basis. The formula is a combination of volatile oil and carnauba oil which allow for smooth, even application.

Now, it took me a trail run or two to perfect the application process associated with this product. In order to do so, I’ve been using the following steps:

  1. Apply a small amount of “Aqua Brow” on the back of your hand or a spatula.
  2. Using the angled brush, start at the arch of the brow and trace down to the tail. Then
connect the base of the brow to the arch.
  3. To fill in a gap, dot a small amount of product on to the skin with the tip of the slanted brush, then work it outwards using the full width of the brush.
  4. Use the spiral brush to comb through and soften.

In my opinion, the most important step is number 4. It is necessary to comb the brows through really thoroughly with a spiral brush in order to achieve a natural look. I absolutely detest really obvious brow pencilling so this product allows me to avoid the harsh lines that set my nerves on edge.

Apparently, this product can also be used as a tint for grey hair, moustaches and sideburns so, beware of your Dad “borrowing” it from your make-up collection. All in all, I think that this is a great product. It’s quick and easy to use with a pretty expansive shade range – even suitable for us “ginga ninjas”. At the moment, I’m using shade number 20 “Light Brown” and it’s a pretty spot-on colour match with my natural brows.

“Aqua Brow” retails at €20 and is available from makeupforever.ie. What do you think? Are you a pencil or gel kind of brow gal?

Flormar’s “Magical Colour Effect Correcting Cream” – Review.

The ‘season to be jolly’ has officially come to a close and I have to say, my skin is squealing with relief. Many nights out, lots of make-up and lack of sleep can cause skin to dehydrate and blemish – disaster! So, over the past few days, I have ditched the ‘full-coverage’ foundation for a more moisturising option – Flormar’s “CC Cream”.

Flormar’s “Magical Colour Effect Correcting Cream” is marketed as a multi-purpose beauty product which illuminates and transforms skin from drab to fab in seconds. But, does it live up to expectations?

The “CC Cream” is available in four different shades:

  • CCO1 (Purple): brightens tired looking skin by balancing the yellow/green tones in your skin, to give you a more alert, fresher look.
  • CCO2 (Green): helps neutralise redness to give a more natural, even look.
  • CCO3 (Pink): neutralizes blue-green tones in your skin, to banish dark circles under the eyes.
  • CCO4 (Neutral): provides extra coverage and is ideal for problematic areas such as scars.

Of these shades, I was lucky enough to be gifted CCO3 and CCO4 and I have been reaching for both non-stop over the past two weeks. Both formulas contain light-reflecting pigments which transform into foundation when applied on to skin. This means that the shade adapts to match your natural skin tone. Now, ordinarily I think that ‘one shade suits all’ formulas are a gimmick but I have to say that this one adapted perfectly to my porcelain pale skin – no orange tone in sight!

The “CC Cream” does exactly what it claims to do on the packaging by illuminating and brightening skin. It’s perfect for providing a ‘barely there’ make-up look. CCO4 provides excellent coverage and would be ideal for blemish prone skin, while CCO3 will awaken tired, dull skin.

At a price point of just €11.95, this product is an absolute must-have and is definitely staying resident in my make-up bag. In fact, I am absolutely dying to purchase CCO2 because I’m always looking for new anti-redness formulas.

Let me know if you have tried this product. Or, if you have another “CC Cream” favourite.

Armani Prive – “Cuir Noir” (€215).

Armani Prive

This one is a dark, provocative perfume with leather accents. Although it is a very strong scent, I think it makes the perfect “night-time” fragrance. Available here from Brown Thomas.

Jo Malone London – Wood Sage and Sea Salt Cologne (€105).

Jo Malone

This fragrance is much lighter than the Armani Prive blend. The “Wood Sage and Sea Salt Cologne” stole my heart in seconds. Upon application, I was transported to a windswept haven – I could almost taste the bitter sea water. I am sick to death of “tropical” beach scents and this perfume offers a beautiful alternative. I love the notes of sage which add a delicate woody fragrance. It’s a soothing scent, reminiscent of rugged cliffs. This cologne has become my signature scent – you can read my full review here. The perfume is available here from Brown Thomas.

Wolford – Cara Swarovski Crystal Tights (€139).

Wolford Tights

These tights will make any woman feel like Beyonce – enough said. Available here from Brown Thomas.

Kate Spade New York – Cedar Street Maise Bag (€335).
