Help Meaghers Pharmacy #WRAP4HOMELESS this Christmas – Top 5 Picks for Her.

“The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention.” – Oscar Wilde.

peter-mc-verry-homeless-charity-ireland

A few weeks ago, Meaghers Pharmacy launched their #Wrap4Homeless campaign in aid of the Petter Mc Verry Trust. The campaign aims to highlight the issue of homelessness in Ireland and to raise funds for those in need of shelter. Unfortunately, the issue is a growing problem in Irish society, with 6,709 people registering as homeless in September 2016. Just €4 can provide a homeless person with shelter and a warm bed for the night, so in order to provide more people with these facilities over the winter months; Meaghers have introduce a gift wrapping service for Christmas. For every two gifts wrapped, they will provide one person with a bed for the night. So, choosing to pay a tiny fee to have your gifts wrapped (rather than spending hours struggling with the sellotape) is a really small gesture that could make a really big difference.

Keeping that in mind, here are some gift ideas “for her” that you can use as inspiration.

AYU “All About Eyes” Set (available here):

Clarins Detox Collection Giftset (available here):

I already have this set myself and it’s perfect for anyone who likes to travel. All of the products are refreshing and work well on dull, tired skin. The giftset would make a great present for tired Mums or girls who are always on the go. I also love the little travel bag that is included in the set – it’s a good size and easily fits all the cosmetics that one carries in an overnight bag.

The “52 Week Happiness Planner” (available here):

52-week-happiness-planner

Ladies went mad for these “52 Week Happiness Planners” when they were released last year and I’m assuming that it will be no different this year. This is a great gift for stationary lovers and those who keep a diary. Bridget Jones, eat your heart out!

theBalm – Christmas Collection 2016

“Dear Santa, I can explain….” – Anonymous.

theBalm are one of my favourite make up brands EVER. I love the quirky packaging but more importantly, I love the products. At a reasonable price-point, the brand never seem to fail when it comes to delivering on quality and that is really the important thing for every beauty addict. Keeping this in mind, I’ve decided to help you out a little when it comes to constructing your Christmas wish list. Apologies in advance, because I know you will want it all.

Meet Matt(e) Hughes Mini Collection

Anyone who follows me on social media already knows that I am OBSESSED with these liquid lipsticks. I think they beat the cult favourite “Kylie Jenner Lip Kits” hands down. I’ve written a full review here. My favourite shade is “Loyal” which is a divine red – perfect for Christmas. However, if I was purchasing a gift for a friend, I would definitely pick up this multi-pack. Six shades for just €29.

TheBalm Appetit Eyeshadow Palette

This one is a gorgeous eyeshadow palette that can be used to create neutral or fun, colourful looks. The packaging is quirky and cute with some tongue-in-cheek slogans and shade names. I love the inclusion of shimmer shades – we all need a little sparkle in our lives over the festive season. My favourite shade is “Chris. P Bacon” which is a gorgeous burnt orange colour with lots of shimmer – perfect for use as a “pop” shade on the centre of the eyelid. This palette retails at €39.95 which may seem a little steep but the shadows themselves are  a large size and should last a lifetime. It’s going to be a sell-out so my advice is to pick one up while stocks last.

the-balm-manizer-sisters

Meet the Manizer Sisters

Every beauty nerd has heard about theBalm’s cult favourite “Mary-Lou Manizer”. It’s arguably the best powder highlighter on the market so, if you haven’t tried it, what are you waiting for? Or better still, pick up this limited edition palette and try Mary Lou’s sister products too. I adore the “Cindy Lou” shade as a blusher – it’s my everyday go-to product. And, “Betty Lou” would be a great product for anyone who likes a bronzer that has a little flicker of shimmer throughout the formula. The “Meet the Manizer Sisters” palette would be perfect for gals on the go who don’t want to carry around really bulky, heavy make-up kits in their handbags. It retails at €28 which is very reasonable considering the individual products cost €21.50 each.

So what do you think of the products? I bet that you want them all! theBalm’s Christmas products are available from retailers nationwide including Debenhams, Meaghers Pharmacy and Make Up Forever (Clarendon Street, Dublin 2). Wrap Up For Winter With Regatta

winter-snow-quote

Ok, so I’m laughing at myself for writing this post. I can’t believe that I have gotten so old that I am suddenly taking Mum’s age old advice and investing in a “good, warm, water-proof winter jacket”. It would appear that she has been right all along.. Although, this probably comes as no surprise to all of the Mammies out there who are reading this post.

I walk to work every morning and yikes, it has gotten cold. A new “outdoorsy” jacket was an essential. So, after some research, I got myself a Regatta jacket and I was surprised to find that although the jacket is indeed weather-proof, it’s also pretty stylish – in my opinion, anyway. Obviously, one jacket has lead to a new found fascination with outdoor clothing and now, I have the whole family stocked up on fleeces and water-proof jackets. Yes, we are as cool as we sound. However, I thought you might be interested in purchasing some items for yourself so, I’ve complied a little list for you.

For Her:

For Him:

The links I have added in to this piece will take you to the UK website for Regatta. Now, while the product range is excellent, postage is a little steep at £8.50 (international). The good news is that Regatta is stocked in lots of stores throughout Ireland such as Fifty Three Degrees North, in the Regatta store at The Square in Tallaght and other sports stores nationwide. You can also order online from Littlewoods.

So what do you think, are you going to invest in a winter coat that your Mammy would be proud of? Drop us a line in the comment section and let us know which is your favourite.

Yves Saint Laurent “Fusion Ink Encre de Peau” Cushion Foundation – Review.

“We must never confuse elegance with snobbery.” – Yves Saint Laurent.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been getting lots of questions on Snapchat (@rougewriting) about the foundation that I have been wearing. Many of you have noticed the switch up in products from my beloved Too Faced’s “Born This Way” to a gorgeous new release. So it’s time to let you in on the secret. Let me introduce my new favourite “day time” foundation: YSL’s “Fusion Ink Encre de Peau”.

ysl-cushion-foundation

This baby is the first ever cushion foundation to come into my possession and, although I will admit that I was skeptical of the “cushion” concept when it first appeared on the market; it’s a must have. Yes, the likelihood is that you do get less product for your hard-earned cash but, the formula in this YSL cushion compact applies flawlessly. It just glides on to the skin to give an airbrushed effect. And, I can’t argue with that.

First up, let’s talk about the packaging. YSL products always ooze elegance and luxury and this compact is no different. The “Fusion Ink Encre de Peau” cushion foundation would definitely provide decoration for any beauty lover’s dressing table. However, I think it’s important to look past the gorgeous packaging and ask ourselves whether it’s practical for carrying around in one’s handbag. After all, it is advertised as a cushion compact for women on the go. The packaging of this foundation is extremely durable and secure. It has a clasp mechanism that reduces the likelihood of spillages, and unlike products contained in glass bottles, it is “smash-proof”. The compact also contains a small mirror and a sponge applicator which is handy for “top-ups” at the end of the work day.

The YSL cushion foundation is available in 6 different shades which may seem limiting but, I’m delighted to report that they have catered for the palest of the pale. I wear the shade B10 (without wearing any false tan) and it’s a pretty perfect match for porcelain skin. I do recommend going to get shade matched at a YSL counter before purchasing though.

The texture of this foundation is very different from that which we have come to expect from “pump” formulas. It seems lighter and easier to blend. In fact, you can pat this foundation on using a sponge and it really eliminates the need for any blending at all. The product feels very light on the skin but it does provide decent coverage. Now, I’ve heard many beauty bloggers describe this as a full coverage foundation over the past few weeks and I would probably disagree with that. The formula can be applied very lightly for a “barely there” look, which is how I prefer to wear mine or; it can be built up to a medium coverage. I don’t think it’s as full coverage as some other products on the market and honestly, I think it’s always better to look radiant rather than “caked”.

The foundation is pretty long lasting but because it’s a “dewy” formula, those who have oily skin will probably find the need to re-apply powder once or twice throughout the day. The above picture demonstrated approx 5 hours of wear and if you ask me, the foundation doesn’t look like it has budged at all.

Of course, the price is a little steep at €45 for the compact but the good news is that the cushion refills are a little more affordable at €35. It remains to be seen how long one refill lasts but I have been using this foundation religiously for over a month and haven’t noticed the formula “running low”.

The YSL cushion foundation is available in Debenhams, Brown Thomas and stockists nationwide.

What do you think? Would you be willing to splurge €45 on a cushion foundation? Let us know in the comments section.

“Le Drunch” at the Marker Hotel – Review.

sundays

I’m the Queen of brunch. Almost every Sunday, I will drag myself from my cosy nest of blankets and pillows and traipse across town in search of a yummy “Eggs Benedict” or my all-time favourite “Coco Pops French Toast”. The only issue I have with this is that, the odd time, I’m feeling a little fragile after a night of partying and getting up at 10 am for brunch becomes a little less appealing. However, the Marker Hotel know what’s up, and they’ve come up with a solution to my little problem. Let me present “Le Drunch”.

“Le Drunch” is a combination of dinner and brunch and it is served from 2pm on Sundays, out in the very picturesque setting of Grand Canal Square. A fortnight ago, I ventured out to sample some of the dishes, with the help of my lovely Mum, in celebration of completing my final exams. My mouth is currently watering just thinking about it…

We kicked the celebrations off with a thirst-quenching cocktail. In the Marker, they present you with the option to “build your own” Mojito. So divine… This one was my choice and was infused with strawberries. Mum had the cocktail pictured on the right. This one is the “Marker Dream” and was infused with Beefeater Gin, Chambord, elderflower, grapes and lime juice. She loved it, and may have had another one over the course of the meal but ssshhh..

In order to make complete pigs of ourselves, we decided to order three courses during “Le Drunch” and pictured above were our “Start Plates”. I had the “Chipotle Spiced Chicken Wings” while Mum tried the “Tiger Prawns”. Now, of course I sampled both.

The chicken wings were the most unusual that I’ve ever tasted. Whilst I am very dedicated to my generic “hot sauce” style wings, the Marker’s wings were a refreshing change from the ordinary. These wings were glazed to perfection and tasted spicy, while retaining some sweetness with the sprinkle a pomegranate.

Of course, Mum the star dish. Her prawns were the highlight of the entire meal. The prawns were served with garlic, shallots, chilli & French baguette. And, oh my goodness, they were amazing. The meat was tender, succulent and cooked to perfection. I would return to “Le Drunch” at the Marker, even if this dish was the only one on the menu.

img_7715-1

img_7714

Next up was the main course. When we entered the Marker Hotel, we decided to leave the diet at the door so, we ordered from the “Comfort” section of the menu. There’s also a “Equilibrium” section that offers healthy alternatives and would be a great option for any one who considers themselves to be “fit fam” material. This time, I ordered the “John Stone’s Butcher’s Secret” dish while Mum had “The Marker Charolais Irish Beef Burger”.

The “John Stone’s Butcher’s Secret” was essentially a really tender cut of meat, served with champ, roast shallots, mushrooms and peppercorn sauce. The meat could be described as “melt in your mouth”. I’m starving just thinking about it! Also, I’m a stickler when it comes to any kind of mashed potato and in this instance, the champ was completely “lump-free” and creamy. I cleared my plate..

Mum said that her burger was really well cooked and juicy. She enjoyed the Parmesan truffle fries and, the homemade tomato relish was gorgeous. However, if we had to pick a winner in the main course department; my choice comes out on top.

img_7712

I can barely breath thinking of it, but there was no way we could have left without sampling the dessert on the “Le Drunch Menu”. If the truth was told, I would have to admit that I would have gladly eaten every dish on the menu.. Yes, I do have a sugar addiction. So, to finish, Mum had the “Baked Alaska” (pictured above) and all I can say is; why on earth isn’t this dish served everywhere? It was essentially a plate of fluffy, meringue and ice-cream goodness. I was raging that I didn’t order this dessert myself!

img_7713

I decided to try the “Banoffee” which is my absolute favourite dessert. Now, don’t get me wrong; it was absolutely delicious but, I was so full that I only managed a few bites before admitting defeat. Banoffee pie is always a very heavy dessert so, I would only recommend ordering this one if you haven’t just eaten your weight beforehand. Still worth it though!

Overall, “Le Drunch” at the Marker Hotel was one of my favourite dining experiences in Dublin, to date. The staff were lovely, the setting was stunning and the food – well, the pictures speak for themselves.

If you want to take a look at the food menu you can do so here. You can also take a sneak peak at the cocktails/drinks menu here. It is a little on the pricey side but as they say, “treat yo self” – it’s definitely worth it!

If you have anymore dining recommendations in Dublin, I would love to hear them. You can let me know here (in the comment section) or over on Instagram (username: rougewritinghood).
