The Gotham Cafe – Foodie Review.

If this blog isn’t making you gain weight, you’re not reading it properly. Today, we’re taking a trip to The Gotham Cafe on South Anne Street, Dublin. A hidden gem, located just off Grafton Street, this place is definitely worth the visit. You will be greeted with quirky, retro decor and a big welcome from the really friendly staff. The Gotham Cafe is bustling with shoppers, natives and tourists alike so it’s the perfect place for a break from reality.

Myself and my fabulous friend Tanya had the good fortune to visit The Gotham Cafe on a gloriously sunny day. Therefore, we sat outdoors to enjoy the buzzing ambience of the city. Opting for the lunch menu which is great value, I selected the “Chargrilled Herbed Chicken Ciabatta Sandwich” while Tanya had the “Chargrilled Steak Ciabatta Sandwich”. Both were equally flavoursome and delicious!

First up, we have the chicken sandwich. This treat  was layered on ciabatta, smothered in sweet chilli & basil crème fraîche and served with homemade fries and mixed salad. A minute on the lips, a lifetime on the hips but worth every second. The chicken was succulent, the dressing was tangy and full of flavour while the bread was fresh and crispy.

So, what about the steak sandwich? Personally, I’m not a huge fan of steak sandwiches – I always find that the steak is cut too thinly and usually overcooked. However, I had a little taste of Tanya’s dish at The Gotham Cafe and can vouch for the fact that it was nothing short of delicious! The sandwich was accompanied with garlic mayonnaise, rocket, tomato, relish and homemade fries. Thinly cut, yet cooked to perfection – the steak was of the ‘melt in mouth variety’ and like my own, the fries were crispy on the outside and perfectly fluffy on the inside.

All this food came in at under €20, so you won’t feel too guilty about treating yourself.

Let me know if you try it – I love hearing your feedback!

Too Slick For Summer.

Looks like it is heating up out there and as the sun comes out to play, some of us will experience loss of make-up through facial oil slick. A natural disaster – I paid a fortune for this foundation, what do you mean it’s disappeared within the hour? I’ve searched high and low for a reasonably priced solution to this problem and I think I’ve finally found it.

Meet Bioderma’s ‘Sebium Pore Refiner’. Aimed at oily skin, this product is a mattifying fluid which doubles as a long-term treatment that reduces the appearance of pores. During the summer, I always wear a facial SPF and this can often leave a greasy residue on skin so, although I do not have naturally oily skin, I am getting great use out of the product.

Bioderma recommend that you use this product alone or over your moisturiser and SPF on a twice-daily basis. Those who have combination skin may find that they need only use it on their T-Zone. Personally, I have been using the formula each morning over my SPF. I simply mix it with some liquid primer to create the perfect base for matte foundation.

Like many Bioderma products, this one has my approval. And, the best part? It is super affordable! I had a look around online and at the moment, Escentual have 1/3 off Bioderma products. The ‘Sebium Pore Refiner’ is available here:

Are You Made of Tough Stuff?

Anyone who follows me on Twitter will know that I’m a huge fan of Cocoa Brown’s ‘1 Hour Tan’ mousse. Tanning Thursday has become a ritual in my house but by Monday my skin can appear a little dull as stubborn tan clings on for dear life. I usually end up looking like I have a rare skin condition which renders me ghostly white with perfectly tanned elbows and ankles!  However, it would seem that the ever clever Marissa Carter can solve all of my problems.

Cocoa Brown have developed their own body scrub which is aptly named ‘Tough Stuff’. This formula promises to prepare skin for self-tanning, removes stubborn tan and operates as a regular body exfoliator. But, does it live up to expectations? Why, of course it does! Another high quality product from a fabulous Irish company.

You can apply the formula wet or dry (I prefer dry for a deep exfoliation) and skin becomes squeaky clean. It is a heavy-duty scrub but it’s not harsh on soft skin. Orange patches be banished! This scrub is lightly fragranced with the nice floral scent which has become the signature of Cocoa Brown products. Best of all, ‘Tough Stuff’ is available in pharmacies nationwide, Penneys, FeelUnique.com and Cloud10beauty.com for the bargain price of €4.99.

I hope you love it as much as I do! Have you tried any of the other products from the Cocoa Brown range? Next on my wishlist is ‘Gentle Bronze’, their gradual tanning moisturiser.

If My Hair Were Any Shinier, You’d Need Sunglasses!

I’m gonna be the MANE event, like no King was before. I’m brushing up on looking down, I’m working on my ROAR!

So, I was a little skeptical about trying Mane ‘n’ Tail’s horse to human crossover shampoo. I mean, have you ever met a ginger horse? However, I’m a sucker for haircare hype and so, I picked up a shampoo and conditioner duo in the original formula this week (€6.20 each in Cara Pharmacy).

Available here: https://www.carapharmacy.com/search/mane%20n%20tail/page-1

BEST DECISION OF THE WEEK! I absolutely love these products. First of all, the packaging is delightful – simple but fun. I love the fact that it provides instructions on how to wash a horse, should I ever need to. And, best of all, my hair is glossier than normal after just one wash.

The shampoo is a protein formula which provides a lovely lather. It’s slightly fragranced and leaves hair feeling squeaky clean. While, the conditioner is a lovely moisturising formula with natural oils to nourish the scalp.

Upon drying, my hair is soft, shiny and full of volume. I can see why Jennifer Aniston recommends the brand.

Next on my Mane ‘N’ Tail wishlist is the entire range. I’ve found a new brand addiction. Do any of you have a recommendation?

Eye Want Those Lashes.

Unfortunately, those of us with fair hair know well what it’s like to have invisible eyelashes. When I leave the house without multiple layers of mascara I’m generally met with a chorus of “oh my god, are you feeling sick?”. Yes that’s how I look without my make-up – malnourished.

So, here is my favourite ‘daytime’ mascara of the moment – L’Oreal’s ‘Mega Volume Collagene Mascara’ (€13.49). Available at pharmacies nationwide.

I’m a big fan of L’Oreal mascaras because they’ve always held their own when compared to high-end, expensive alternatives. This particular one is my favourite because it’s all about the volume. I can easily double coat my lashes without clumping and the formula is a ‘blacker-than-black’ shade.

Use this mascara by placing the wand at the root of your lashes and moving upwards and outwards with a wriggling movement.

A really noticeable difference with no flaking throughout the day. I think I’ll be re-purchasing this one!

You’ve Got It Glowing On.

It’s true what they say; beauty is only skin deep. So, you better take care of that skin!

As summer approaches, we all need to make changes to our skincare routine. And, Irish weather permitting, turning off the central heating means easing up on heavy moisturiser. Nobody wants a face that resembles an oil slick.

Last Summer, while I was living in London, the heat was too much for my dehydrated skin so I popped to my local Benefit counter. There, a fabulous Benebabe recommended I try their ‘Triple Performing Facial Emulsion’ (€31.50). This product is a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser with SPF 15.

Available here at: https://www.carapharmacy.com/p/benefit_triple_performing_facial_emulsion.

I love this product because it rehydrates skin without leaving an oily residue. It soaks in quickly making it perfect for a quick morning make-up routine. Massage into skin and neck using a circular motion – I find two or three pumps is an adequate amount meaning the bottle will last ages. The lotion should leave your skin glowing and flake feel. The formula is slightly scented so those who have sensitive skin should sample before purchase.

I’ll Be Ready in Five Minutes!

Make up can only make you look pretty on the outside. It doesn’t help if you’re ugly on the inside – unless you eat the make up.

So I’ve pressed ‘snooze’ a few too many times and now have 5 minutes to get ready for college. Better still, everyone else in the class usually looks like they’re ready for the runway – great!

Here’s one for of the quickest make-up routines a student can think up!

1) Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise – that glass of wine last night wasn’t as sneaky as you think!

2) A light base blended all over with your fingers. I swear by Charlotte Tilbury’s ‘Light Wonder’ foundation in ‘1 Fair’ (€42). It’s luminous, light and has SPF15. Just shake well before use. Available here:

http://www.brownthomas.com/complexion/light-wonder-1-fair-youth-boosting-perfect-skin-foundation-spf15/invt/145x5459xffdnx40x1r10

3) Concealer if you need it. Once again, use fingers to dab product directly onto blemishes and underneath tired eyes.

4) Mascara! Essential for a bright eye! I love Armani’s ‘Eyes To Kill’ (€32.50).

Available here: http://www.brownthomas.com/mascara/eyes-to-kill-wet-mascara/invt/140x2161x617221

Place wand at root of eyelashes and pull upwards and outwards with a wriggling motion.

5) Brows should always be on point. When you don’t have time to fill and shape, a tinted gel like Benefit’s ‘Gimme Brow’ (€25.50) will still work wonders. Just coat brows once with the formula.

Cara Pharmacy provided the lowest price on my Benefit search: https://www.carapharmacy.com/p/benefit_gimme_brow

6) If I’m skipping eyeshadow and liner to save time, I like to create a bold lip. Red is always my colour of choice. Today I used Dior’s lipline pencil in ‘Rouge Royal’ (£19) and their ‘Diorific’ lipstick in ‘Marilyn’ (£28).

I found both products on House of Fraser’s UK website: http://www.houseoffraser.co.uk/Dior+Dior+Contour+Lipliner+Pencil/B117707,default,pd.html and http://www.houseoffraser.co.uk/Dior+Diorific+Lipstick/D370479,default,pd.html

Use the lip liner to emphasise the ‘V’ of your upper lip and always apply red lipstick with a lip brush for accurate application.

7) Finally, a little cheek tint can be applied. I tend to gauge how much to use against how bright my lips are. I recommend Benefit’s ‘Cha Cha Tint’ (€34.50) because it’s subtle.

Available here: https://www.carapharmacy.com/p/benefit_chachatint

Just two dots on the apples of your cheeks (blended with your fingers) create a healthy glow.

That’s it! You’re finished!

Let me know if you try the routine! Or, if you can make it shorter?
